Development: Layout and Featured Article

For my magazine layout, I started by creating a masthead for the magazine. This is the title of the magazine, which is usually placed at the top of the page, and it sets the tone for the content of the magazine. I chose to use a bold font in a white color outlined with blue to give the magazine a modern and energetic feel. Next, I chose a font for all of the written content on the page. I wanted to use a font that was easy to read and that would draw the reader’s eye. I chose a sans-serif font in a medium weight, which created a modern and sporty look. For the photography on the layout, I chose images that were relevant to the content of the magazine. I wanted to create a sense of energy and excitement, so I chose images that were taken at an interesting angle. The images also had a bright and vibrant color palette, which added to the magazine’s overall aesthetic. I also followed some conventions when creating the layout. I included a masthead, which is a standard element of any magazine layout. I also made sure to include a byline and a dateline, so readers would know who wrote the article and when it was published

Analysis

When retouching my images, I started by duplicating the layer. The camera raw filter was the next option I chose. The colors in the image were then given a boost by adjusting the highlights. I also changed the shadows in the image because they obscured most of my model's face and made it difficult to view it well. I used the smudge brush and lasso tool to eliminate any undesirable things from my photo after adjusting the colors and shadows.

To create my magazine, I utilized Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign. I encountered various difficulties because I was unfamiliar with the program before making this magazine. I improved as I utilized it more frequently. I used the "Ranked Sports" font in size 76 and white for my masthead. I attempted to achieve an athletic look with my typography. As the majority of my shots were dark, I utilized Photoshop to brighten them and give them a pleasing and colorful appearance. I selected these images because the subject of my magazine—young black men—will be able to identify with them.

Development: Photoshoot

Analysis:

The model was a young black teen. These pictures were taken by the school's weight room. The photos were taken on an iPhone 6s. The model had on black shorts and a sleeveless white tank top as he was working out in the gym. There were some restrictions because I was unable to capture him working out on a real football field. Another was that he wasn't wearing the football gear I wanted to see him in.

Ancillary Task: Adding and Formatting Text using InDesign

I made a frame for this project using InDesign. I inserted text into the frame using the type tool. I also saved a photo onto my frame and added it using the rectangle tool. I changed the text's color, size, and font as well.

Representation in Media: Stereotypes

1. Reinforce gender stereotypes

a.) Regina George from Mean Girls-

  •  Regina George from Mean Girls reinforces the gender stereotype. She wears a lot of pink clothing which is a color which is usually attached with girls. Most of her conversations are about relationships which are associated with the traditional gender role of a girl.

    b.) Madea-

  • Maddie reinforces the gender stereotype. This character perpetuates the stereotype of the angry and sassy black woman.

    c.) Kurt Hummel from Glee-

  • Kurt Hummel from Glee reinforces the gender stereotype. He is the gay best friend which has become a common trope in modern-day television and film. They share screen time with their female heterosexual friends but usually in a supporting role that ranges from a relationship adviser to a fabulous fashion accessory.

2. Challenge gender stereotypes

a.) Katherine Johnson from Hidden Figures-

  • Katherine Johnson from Hidden Figures challenges gender stereotypes. This film depicts a smart and intelligent black woman.

b.) Doris Murphy from A league of their own-

  • The character Doris from "A league of their own" questions gender norms. This character defies gender preconceptions since it described how athletics changed in the 1940s with the introduction of female participants. Baseball in the Major Leagues was exclusively open to men during World War 2.

c.) Katniss Everdeen from Hunger Games -

  • Katniss Everdeen from Hunger Games challenges gender stereotypes. She is a fierce warrior who protects the people she loves. This alone challenges the gender stereotype because women are not typically portrayed in this way.
